Australian wildlife is my passion. I’ve travelled all over the continent, from the tropical zones of the Northern Territory, to the Southern States with their snowy regions. I’ve seen the gorgeous wildflowers of Western Australia and even gone opal mining in Lightning Ridge in outback Australia. I’m constantly inspired by these stunning landscapes and the creatures that dwell there. Birds are a firm favourite, as you’ll see.
I create my artworks in acrylics – this medium suits my busy personality and I revel in the abundance of techniques it allows me to employ. My style echoes of realism but I use it only so far as a fantasy author uses logic – it helps me to tell the story but then the relationship ends there. I am happy to tweak reality when the art calls for it.
Occasionally I take ‘abstract painting holidays’, enjoying some unbridled expression, and then get back to my usual style. I share some of that here because it’s all part of who I am as an artist.
I find my bliss when I paint.
Thanks so much for stopping by.

Photography is becoming a larger part of my creative process. I’ve always used up to thirty photo’s of a subject to get a real understanding of it before I paint. I sketch the subject several times and from several different perspectives.
I’m now working more and more from my own photographs, building up a reference library. It’s an opportunity to also build my photography skills as I go along. My father was an enthusiastic hobbyist photographer, and I hope I learnt a little from him as he worked at capturing that brilliant photo where everything alines; the lighting, the background, the subject matter.
My first camera was a little box brownie when I was ten years old! The cost of film and processing was always a concern so you had to limit how many shots you’d take of one subject. I still find it hard to remind myself that with the digital camera I can take hundreds of photo’s at a time!
Here’s a few examples…

This is my latest piece. I have to say, I had a ball painting this one. It feels like, after nearly six years of painting again, a large piece of the puzzle has clicked into place. I was more confident working on this one and I think that comes through in the work.
I wanted to show the intensity of the bird’s focus on the flowers. The Blue-faced Honeyeater is quite a character – busy and creative. His intensity is only fleeting and then he is off to find food elsewhere – often in strange places like insects found under the eaves of your house or by running his beak along palm fronds to find the spiders hiding there.
This piece is petite being 20 x20cms
Completed on a deep edge canvas with the sides carefully painted to match
The original is currently available – prints will be available online at Imagkind.com – details to follow this week.

From the outset, I was quite deliberate about my decision not to gain a formal education in art. I wanted to learn in an informal way, gaining my confidence and finding my own style, through experience and experimentation.
I prefer, however, to use the term informally educated rather than self taught to describe how I’ve acquired my skills. Learning vicariously, I’ve been influenced by all the amazing and talented people that go before me. I’ve learnt so much from my artistic Grandmother; I remember vividly art lessons in school; and I have burnt into my minds eye certain pieces of artwork that still effect me and my work today.
The term “informal education” allows for this, and, acknowledges that I have learnt from others, though not in a formalised way with a certificate at the end of the journey. I have an education in art – not acquired in the traditional way, but acquired none the less.

The world’s largest tree frog is quite the character. With his large white rimmed mouth looking like it’s set in a grin you can find him clinging to watery reeds or tree branches, or, your bathroom window!
Set amongst the bottlebrushes for this piece to give contrast to his beautiful greens.

“Look Before You Leap” revisits the white lipped tree frog. Had so much fun getting to know this little frog the first time, I wanted to paint him again. This time he is more animated – looking ready to leap any second from his reed. He clings to his reed in a watery rainforest area with shards of sunlight breaking through.

"JABIRU JILL"
This piece is all about the tranquillity of the bird against the backdrop of Yellow Waters Billabong.
Here the Jabiru resides, stately and calm; sharing the billabong with crocodiles and thousands of other water going birds, amongst the gorgeous lilies. The air is thick and heavy with humidity. The dark feathers of the Jabiru shimmering with all their stunning colour, as she wades through the water.

Echinacea on Stage - by Rebecca Phillips
“ECHINACEA ON STAGE” Original Acrylic Artwork on Artists’ Canvas Board – Ready Framed
“Echinacea On Stage” is as much about the flower, as it is about the gum tree which provides the “curtain backdrop” to the painting.
My daughter took a photo of this scene while we were on a trip up the range to Montville. The morning light was dancing through the undergrowth and the flowers just as beautiful as the gums with all their colour and texture.
Acrylic on Artists Canvas board
Ready to hang in a contemperary black frame with gold edging.
50 x 40 cms (including the frame)
Currently on exhibit at “Visual Sensations” Yandina QLD.

- “SILENT HUNTER” Original Acrylic Artwork on Quality Canvas
“Silent Hunter” was painted after a fishing trip my family took (which was largely unsuccessful excepting for the gorgeous surrounds) during which we were all transfixed by the stillness of the Great White Egret, hunting in the shallows. My aim was to convey the tranquil atmosphere of the river and the quiet confidence of the hunting bird.
